Cat Friendly Clinic

We love cats, and you love cats. One thing cats often don't like is coming to the vet clinic. In our bid to ease your cats stress we became a certified Cat Friendly Clinic in 2015. Below are some of the other things the we have done, and that you can do to make your cats visit to the clinic as stress free as possible!

Feline Practitioner

Olja Jovovich is a vet who is fanatical about cats. She lives and breathes feline medicine, she has cat stickers on her car and if you look at her in just the right light it looks like she may have whiskers. She's also studying towards a Feline Medicine membership at the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. With all these skills we thought she was purrfect (sorry) for our clinic. She's our go to vet for curly feline conundrums and she prides herself in her cat friendly handling skills for super anxious kitties.

Travel to the clinic

Getting a cat in a cage and getting the cage to the clinic is not fun for anyone.

It's important to know that your pet can be seen 24 hours a day and that your sick pet can receive round the clock observation if necessary. When we are closed or if we need to transfer a critical patient for overnight care then we use the Animal Emergency Centre. A fantastic after hours facility that means you are never without top quality veterinary care.

Feline Phone Consults

One way to minimise feline stress is to leave them at home! For behavioural problems we offer half hour phone consults with our Feline Practitioner Olja Jovovich. She will usually follow up the phone consult with an information packed email and in some cases she may even recommend a home visit so she can evaluate your cats behaviour in it's natural surroundings. Contact the clinic for more information for an appointment or more information.

Cats don't like big noisy dogs and so when they come to the Onewa Road Veterinary Hospital we don't put them with dogs. Our cats enjoy their own feline cat ward along with feliway pheromone diffusers to keep things calm. If your cat doesn't like other cats either we can also house them in our isolation ward on their own. Very quiet and very peaceful.

Diagnostics, it's how we get to the bottom of what's causing your pets ill health. In clinic we can do blood tests, urine tests, blood pressure checks and cytology rapidly - sometimes while you wait. We also send samples off to external laboratories several times a day where we make use of expert pathologists to help us along the diagnostic pathway.

For complicated conditions we may choose to offer referral to veterinary specialists including the Veterinary Specialist Group. This is a world class facility located centrally in Mount Albert. VSG is staffed by registered specialists in surgery, medicine and radiology. They work closely with us to provide optimal care for your pets.

Dental issues cause bad breath and chronic pain. Dental care is so important to your animals well being. We can check your pets teeth, and recommend dental diets. If your pet needs dental treatment then we are fully equipped for dental scaling and polishing, tooth extractions and oral surgery as well as digital dental radiography.

Good nursing care is absolutely vital to the recovery of your pet. All our nurses are qualified and experienced. They provide dedicated care during surgery, anaesthesia, radiological studies and hospital care. They keep your pet warm, comfortable and fed. They monitor vital signs, administer medication, and run diagnostics for the vets. Veterinary care really is a team effort.
